The Adhan-Call to Prayer

Definition: The Adhan is an announcement, with specified wording, informing the people of the occurrence of the time of the prayer.

Ruling:

The Adhan is a collective duty upon the inhabitants of villages and townships.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

When the time of the prayer is present , then one of you call the Adhan, and the eldest of you lead the prayer. (Al-Bukhari & Muslim)

It is a Sunnah for both the traveler and the one living in remote areas.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

when you are with your sheep or out in a desert, then call the Adhan for the prayer, raising your voice with the call. For none hears the voice of the moazzin – neither jinn, human, nor anything – except that it will testify to that on the Day of Judgement. (Al-Bukhari)

Its Wording:

The Wording of the Azan as taught by Allah’ Messenger ﷺ to Abu Mahthurah, he said, “Allah’s Messenger taught me the Azan:

Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar.

“Allah is the Most Great, Allah is the Most Great, Allah is the Most Great, Allah is the Most Great.”

Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illaallaah, Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illaallaah.

“I testify that none has the right to be worshiped except Allah, I testify that none has the right to be worshiped except Allah.”

Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullaah, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullaah.

“I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah , I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

“None has the right to be worshiped except Allah.” (At-Tirmithi)

The condition of the Caller:

The one who delivers the Azan should be honest, he should have a nice voice, and be knowledgeable of the times of the prayers. It is recommended to deliver the Adhan from a high place like a minaret. He should place his fingers in his ears, and to turn to the right and to the left when  reciting: “Come to the prayer. “Come to success.” It also is recommended that he does not accept any wage for this job, except form the national treasury or from charitable endowments.
